Apologies for the light blogging. I've been swamped at work trying to get this friggin project done (Hey PK! I've had to think on my feet with deadlines fast approaching). It's finally up and running. Now we're on to stress testing and load balancing (give me strength). Once that's done we're on to platform migration and version upgrade! Simultaneously!

/rant

Seriously, this is the project I've been working on:

Get the temporary website with Version 6.1 up and running so we can do an RFP for the client and with the account.

Simultaneously, we're going to migrate platforms, change to single source warehouse feed and upgrade the software from 6.1 to 6.5.

Me: Um, that's too many moving parts. If something goes wrong we'll never be able to trace the souce

Client: Well, it's what we're doing and we have limited resources.

Me: Um, two things; your overnight batch is a full. Why aren't you rewriting this to be a delta when migrating platforms?

Client: We don't have the resources for that.

Me: But you have to rewrite it anyway when you switch platforms. You're running at almost night hours nightly. You could have that down to about and hour or less.

Client: We don't have the resources

Me: Ok, whatever. Why is your production server in the DMZ not secure? There's no virus protection or spyware blocking

Client: That's a problem. Talk to the network guys about that.

Me: Why are we migrating to 6.5 when that's not the latest version.

Client: That's what we paid for

Me: OK, but that product will not be supported beyond 2006 which means you're going to have to upgrade in 6 months.

Client: I also need you to create a datamart for financials

Me: No. The database isn't built yet and the schema isn't even finished. On top of that, this network diagram you gave me is hopelessly inaccurate. None of the development servers exist anymore and the test servers have been taken over by various sneaky raiding business units when nobody was looking.

Client: You'll have servers by next week. Get started, you have two weeks.

Me: *sigh*

Not really. Their budget does. If the budget runs out so do I.

The guys aren't incompetent so much as overtaken by events. Some of these decisions are environmental and others are a culmination of poor strategery and loss of institutional memory.

They are open to suggestions and actually take my advice when I dig in my heels.
