Terrorists Attack Saudi Oil Facility (updated) . This one is very troubling. A serious blow to Saudi facilities would cause a worldwide shock that would drive oil through the roof. How high? Impossible to say. $5 a gallon is not unlikely. If that happens, look for me. I'll be the guy with the thermostat at 55 and cruise control set at 12.

Strange bedfellows indeed. Dersh and Bennett are taking the MSM to task with this article. Read the whole thing. They make some salient points to be sure. Among them: "Since the war on terrorism began, the mainstream press has had no problem printing stories and pictures that challenged the administration and, in the view of some, compromised our war and peace efforts. The manifold images of abuse at Abu Ghraib come to mind -- images that struck at our effort to win support from Arab governments and peoples, and that pierced the heart of the Muslim world as well as the U.S. military. The press has had no problem with breaking a story using classified information on detention centers for captured terrorists and suspects -- stories that could harm our allies. And it disclosed a surveillance program so highly classified that most members of Congress were unaware of it. In its zeal to publish stories critical of our nation's efforts -- and clearly upsetting to enemies and ...

Only one group is capable of pulling this one off. They've done it before and now have a taste for it. How long before the rank and file realize that the leadership are not idealists, they are gangsters. Maybe they once were idealists and fighting for a cause larger than themselves. Perhaps even a justifiable one (though not through justifiable means). Long ago the money got to them. Now they live in the fine houses and wear bespoke suits. There's only one way to keep the money train rolling.

The port thingy . This is a tempest in a teapot. Writers who are normally cool headed have lost their moorings. The issue here is ownership, not control. I understand the arguement that foreign firms should not be controlling the ports. However, that means we can't have any foreign nation in control of them. Not British, Canadian or Australian. In this case the same people are going to be doing security . The chafe here is that two of the 9/11 hijackers were from the UAE and the company is owned by the government. What both sides are not realizing is that the UAE is one of the most Western oriented and Western friendly, liberal, open Arab Muslim nations. If we're going to build bridges to the Arab world, they are the best place to start. We are not going to win this war without Muslim help. That said, giving them what appears to be control over the keys to our front door wasn't smart politically. It was crafty because it puts the Left in the position of talkin...

Much of the left is agonizing about torture and mistreatment by US forces of detainees in the GWOT. Wretchard linked to a page telling the story of the liberation of Dachau. Waffen-SS soldiers executed by I Company, 157th Regiment, 45th Thunderbird Division during liberation of Dachau : "Soon the advance scouts (of the 45th Division) were joined by other Allied soldiers and one of the German guards came forward to surrender with what he believed would be the usual military protocol. He emerged in full regalia, wearing all his decorations. He had only recently been billeted to Dachau from the Russian front. He saluted and barked 'Heil Hitler'. An American officer looked down and around at mounds of rotting corpses, at thousands of prisoners shrouded in their own filth. He hesitated only a moment, then spat in the Nazi's face, snapping 'Schweinehund,' before ordering him taken away. Moments later a shot rang out and the American officer was informed that the...

MidwestHeroes.com is causing a fuss by making a tv spot that refutes the standard template the MSM has hammered home regarding the GWOT. They seem to have struck a nerve. There is nothing counterfactual in the ad. There are no accusations, no slander or libel. Rather, they simply speak about their own experience and why they get annoyed with the coverage of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Will Iraq split? Michael J. Totten thinks so. My take? Maybe. I think the Kurds are far more predisposed to federalism than their neighbors and with good reason. However, I think the Arabs (both Sunni and Shia) will have to make some significant concessions wrt to oil revenue and Kirkuk. Which would be better? A fractuous unstable Iraq or a stable Kurdistan and Iraq? Granted those are not the only choices but its clear the Kurds can stand on their own without any help. This would makes the Turks insane which, given their perfidity in the runup to the 2003 invasion, bothers me not the least.
