Pyrrhic Victory?

Is last night's win a pyrrhic victory for the Democrats?

They will now have to put their money where their mouth is. They will have to:

Give us "real" security
Have a plan for either winning or leaving Iraq
Raise taxes or cut spending. (One guess which they'll chose)
Provide show trials to keep the Kossacks happy

They won't have anyone to blame in two years time when things are the same in Iraq and the economy takes a beating from higher taxes and a downturn in the real estate market. They've inherited a very strong economy which the MSM will finally realize just how great it's doing. However, if the real estate market continues to soften, it could lead to a slowing or even a minor correction which will only be exacerbated by the coming tax raises. The Democrats can't help themselves and will probably have the shortest lived victory in memory. That's assuming, of course, the GOP realizes that they've gone horribly astray from the Party of Reagan and became the New Deal only bigger. Call it The Big Deal with all the attendant sarcasm that implies.

Rove falls from grace and will exit stage left in between this election day and the next one (gee, what bold prediction! -ed).

The run for '08 began yesterday. Let's look at the early front runners:

Hillary's climb is now uphill. Could it sour her chances for a nod? Maybe. Personally, I think she is such a lightening rod that putting her on the ticket would spell doomsday for the ticket. You could run a dead dog against her as a Republican and they'll turn out in droves to defeat her.

John Kerry doesn't pass the living room test. He's as bad on his feet as Bush is. He drones on endlessly and "pandesenders" to his audience. A fatal combination.

Gore won't get the nod. He had his bite at the apple and lost. His ranting speeches will be enough to sink him no matter that he's climbed down a bit from that ledge.

Two years is a very long time for an election cycle. It's far too early to begin positioning on anything. Wiser candidates will wait until it gets much later to begin campaigning. I agree with the Feiler Faster Thesis. I believe that it's naturally forgone conclusion will be a much shorter election cycle (thank God!) and more October Surprises. I guess you take the good with the bad.
