Life in the universe

Consider the following video: via videosift.com Given the absolute massive size of just one star out of hundreds of billions that comprises just one galaxy out of hundreds of billions more, I think it impossible that there is not life somewhere. I'm not talking about the Star Trek sense where their planet is just like our with one teensy difference (i.e. the Nazi's won WWII or they're all Prohibition Era Gangsters). Life, in some form, must exist elsewhere. Maybe it's amoeba or germs or some form of life we can't fathom, but it's out there.

"Those Jews....Those Zionists"

He's 9 kinds of crazy. This guy has been our President's spiritual advisor for over 20 years. Think about that. You all know the famous lines about "chickens coming home to roost" and "God damn America" so this is not a long trip to "those Jews" and "those zionists". He also talks about "ethnic cleansing in Gaza." I got news for the Reverend. If there's any attempts at ethnic cleansing in Gaza, it ain't those tricksy Jews. Frankly, I hope he's telling the truth and that he hasn't spoken to the President, the only thing he would do is poison him further. If the GOP were smart, they'd video tape ever sermon this guy makes for the next 5 years. They'd also interview him ad nauseum.

Hubris defined

"By his own admission, he becomes chairman of General Motors Corp. knowing nothing about the auto industry." Neither do I. Can I be Chairman? I mean, I'm available and given the state of things how much worse could I make it?

Europe swings Right as depression deepens :: Ambrose Evans-Pritchard : "The establisment Left had been crushed across most of Europe, just as it was in the early 1930s." Hang in there America! There appears to be Hope after all. I just need an Obama countdown widget....

Republicans Take Control Of New York State Senate In Parliamentary Coup

Republicans Take Control Of New York State Senate In Parliamentary Coup : "How did it happen? Democrats can thank their own: Pedro Espada of the Bronx and Hiram Monserrate of Queens, who turned their backs on their fellow Democrats and joined with Republicans." Leave it to WCBS to use the word "coup". Oddly they used no such language when Arlen Spectre switched sides in the most openly craven political maneuver of the year. Democrats so irate that two of their own defected they revert to literal sabotage to prevent their loss of control. Read the rest of the story for more amusing antics.

SLAVERY'S BACK! - Only Cuter... : "The above girl is Cezara. She’s 15 years old and the person who inspired this story." Read it if you can stand it. It's horrifying and heartbreaking. I tend to keep my eye on the beauty in this world but sometimes you have to look into the ugly side to appreciate how bad it can be.

Now this is odd

Obama says North Korea nuclear test a grave concern coupled with "Iran sends six warships to international waters" . Very strange innit? It's almost as if the DPRK and Iran are acting in concert to test the mettle of this new president. I seem to remember someone telling us to mark his words that the new president would be tested in the first six months. Here's the first foreign policy test Mr. Presdient, don't screw it up. ($.01 worth of free advice, keep Joe Biden very far away from this mess. Send him off to annoy the French or something).

Poetry of the Day III

Funeral Blues Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead. Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong. The stars are not wanted now; put out every one, Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun, Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods; For nothing now can ever come to any good. W.H. Auden

Poetry of the Day II

O Captain! My Captain! O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our fearful trip is done; The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won; The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring: But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills; For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding; For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head; It is some dream that on the deck, You’ve fallen cold and dead. My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still; My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will; The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and don...
