Daily Roundup

This is interesting (read: interesting to me and possibly Paul but nobody else), it seems the Synod of Bishops has voted overwhelmingly to add women to the ministry of lectors. That means that women will be allowed/invited/encouraged to read scripture from the pulpit to the congregation. This appears to be some sort of compromise for the liberal wing of the church.

Fr. James Martin my favorite liberal Jesuit (no that's not an oxymoron) has a brief albeit spoiler laden look at Catholicism in Mad Men.

The show you should be watching but aren't.

Unrelated pop culture/TV show stuff. I like Fringe but can't seem to get into it. I never get the sense it's going anywhere. None of the characters are in any real peril. I like the look and feel. The acting is good and so is the writing. The problem is that the whole thing has a "ship in a bottle" feel to it. There is supposed to be some grand story arc about "The Pattern" but it feels too much like an X Files ripoff to me. The story lines aren't really very interesting. Last week they had a guy who inadvertantly was throwing off electrical patterns

Unwritten rules to happiness.
(I guess now that they're written that title probably doesn't apply.)

What does real inflation look like?

This makes me weep. Almost too painful to post. The only thing that makes it tolerable is not being able to read it.

What does universal health care look like?
This will convince exactly no one. Supporters are ossified in their belief that since the current system is broken (by government mind you) the answer it to make it federal.

Property rights protect minorities. Something to keep in mind when we talk about the abrogation of property rights.

Times of India backs McCain

Why?

Look at the accompanying chart. It shows that McCain has voted 88% of the time against bills creating trade barriers, and 90% of the time against export subsidies for US producers. Few other senators have such a splendid record.

Palin is deserving of respect.

I cannot predict who will win the presidential campaign, but I already know who will lose big: all women. I realized this when I saw a 20-something male student who attends a class in the community college where I teach, wearing a T-shirt that read, "Sarah Palin is a C-." He wore it in public, in broad daylight, and without shame or even consciousness of what he was doing.

The hatred escalated to performers advocating Palin be "gang raped," to suggestions that her husband had had sex with their young daughters, and reports that her Down syndrome child really was that of her teenage daughter. One columnist even called for her to submit to DNA testing to prove her virtue. Smells a little like Salem to me. I was present at an Obama rally at which the mention of Palin's name drew shouts of "stone her."

I can't help but see this hatred of Palin as the flip side of the Hillary hatred. The Bush Derangement Syndrome has it's roots in the Clinton Derangement Syndrome.

Would you befriend an abortion clinic bomber? What would you think of a politician who did?

Obama was indeed only 8 years old when Bill Ayers was bombing his country in an attempt to violently overthrow it and literally cede parts of it to the Soviets, ChiComs, North Vietnamese and Cubans. He did not, however, stop associating with the man after he knew of his past and of his recalcitrance. If the man had recanted, repented and spent his life atoning for his evil he would be worthy or forgiveness, even respect. He has not. He will not. That is the measure of the man.

I can't comment on the theology of the situation. I do know that women did serve as lectors in the early Church. As far as whether they can be admitted to the ministerial position, I'll leave that up to the experts.

As the article notes, the Pope is free to reject this suggestion. The synod can only recommend, not bind.

The Ayers thing is an issue for me because personally I wouldn't so much as shake the mans hand, much less have working / political associations with him.

He's a domestic terrorists who's still unrepentant, proud of what he did, and openly admits he didn't do enough. The man is pure scum, yet Obama saw nothing wrong with hanging around with him.

The days have finally wound down, and time will tell tomorrow if we will have a government that will tighten up on government giveaways, or a government that will continue on as the liberal illuminati have in the past.
