Thoughts on LOST

I'm an avid fan of LOST but seldom write about it because nobody's interested around here (nobody's interested in any of your posts yet you still write them. -Ed).

Anyway....

I think Desmond is the key to the show. He's the alpha and the omega. I don't mean that in a biblical fashion but rather that the saga of the island really starts and ends with him. He's not the first on the island but the mysteries largely revolve around him.

Notice that his story parallels Odysseus. His love is also named Penelope and he was lost at sea and has been fighting to return to her for years.

He has become "unstuck in time" just like Billy Pilgrim in Slaughterhouse Five. He is living his life out of sequence and it's driving him mad. The Constant he has chosen is Penny.

Notice that Mr. Widmore was bidding on a book owned by one of Torvald Hanso who we can only assume is related to Alvar. The contents of the book are unknown but are obviously very important.

We know that the freighter belongs to Widmore but they are under strict instructions not to answer the phone when Penny calls. That tells me he's still trying to keep them apart.

Widmore was also uncharacteristically charitable and almost sympathetic to Desmond at the auction. Why? Does he understand Desmond's plight?

Widmore wants to exploit the island. What does that mean? Are there limits to what the island can handle? Why is Ben so protective of that same island?

Now the questions:

What are the numbers and what do they mean?
What is the smoke monster? (Yes we know its a security system but what is it?)
Who is Jacob?
Why does Ben seek his counsel?
Why does he ask for help?
Who was looking back at Hurley from inside the cabin?
Why does the cabin move around?
Who are the Adam and Eve skeletons?
Did Jack really see his father on the island?
Who is dropping supplies and why?
Why did Charlie visit Hurley?
How can Charlie visit Hurley?
Why won't Jack see Aaron?
Who does Richard Abbadon really work for?
Why does Dr. Marvin Candle have two names?
What happened to his arm?
Why did Walt visit John?
How did Walt visit John?
What are the voices?
Why did the island become visible after the EM burst that Desmond released?
Why is Sayid working for Ben?
Why did Sayid kill the guy on the golf course?
Why is there a dead polar bear in the desert?
Where's Michael?
Why is 815 at the bottom of the ocean?
Why did Ben require Juliette to take a pill to board the submarine?
Could it be that the sub never went anywhere and he didn't want to show her the true means of transportation to the island?

That's all I can think of for now. Speculation on any and all questions is welcome
What the hell is going on with Charlotte and Faraday?
Where is Danielle?

Was the "where's Michael" question rhetorical? Or do you really not know? I was talking to a coworker today and we were saying how we figured everybody knew by now. I won't say it in case you don't but it's pretty obvious where he is.

My theories:

What are the numbers and what do they mean?
I think the numbers in and of themselves are meaningless. That is, any six numbers could have been chosen.

What is the smoke monster? (Yes we know its a security system but what is it?)
A quasi-intelligent security system that saves people that are essentially good or not yet chosen the dark side while killing those who have turned evil. Think of how Eko could look at it safely until he refused to repent for his past failings and said they were necessary, once he refused to turn his back on wrongdoing he was killed as he could be a threat to the island's safety.

Who is Jacob?
Barring any further evidence, I'm going with Elvis. But seriously, I'm thinking he; actually Locke from the future.

Why does Ben seek his counsel?
I don't think he is. I think he's keeping him prisoner and only pretending to seek his counsel.

Why does he ask for help?
See above answer.

Who was looking back at Hurley from inside the cabin?
No idea.

Why does the cabin move around?
I think Ben controls it somehow to keep it from being discovered. Even though he shot Locke, he knew there was always the chance Locke would recover, so he had to keep Locke from finding it again.

Who are the Adam and Eve skeletons?
I'm thinking Jack and Kate get back to the island.

Did Jack really see his father on the island?
Yes.

Who is dropping supplies and why?
The remnants of the Dharma Initiative who have been kept in the dark that the Dharma people other than Ben are dead.

Why did Charlie visit Hurley?
TO try to help him. See next answer.

How can Charlie visit Hurley?
Because in an alternate timeline like we've seen in Desmond's time traveling, he's one of the Oceanic 6, or everyone gets off the island. That's why Hurley's going crazy again, he's crossing timelines.

Why won't Jack see Aaron?
The Oceanic 6 cut some shady deal to get themselves off the island and Arron serves as a reminder of that deal to Jack which also resulted in Claire being left behind, so she gave Aaron to Kate to pass off as her own child to get him to safety off the island. (Yes, I see bad things in store for our favorite castaways.)

Who does Richard Abbadon really work for?
Widmore. Even though they found the island right "now" they lose it again through some machinations of Ben and he wants to find it again.

Why does Dr. Marvin Candle have two names?
Not sure. Some sort of cover, obviously.

What happened to his arm?
I'm thinking he lost it in the "Incident" referred to in the training video for the old hatch.

Why did Walt visit John?
Walt has seen the island the same way Ben and Locke have and he wants to protect it as well.

How did Walt visit John?
He can bilocate like the Others. That's why they "walk silently" as the tail section described back in Season 2. They don't actually walk silently, they just appear somewhere like the woman being cheated on last night did to Juliet and they can disappear the same way.

What are the voices?
Psychic energy of the Others being brought with the one billocating at the time. So even when someone didn't suddenly appear, they were there, we just didn't see them.

Why did the island become visible after the EM burst that Desmond released?
The magnetic anomaly that the hatch was maintaining was greatly weakened by the the burst and therefore made it visible to radar and navigation the way it wasn't before. The radiation still exists though as you can tell by the way the freighties have trouble finding specific spots on the island.

Why is Sayid working for Ben?
To keep the secret of the island a secret and protect the 815 survivors left behind. He's killing off people who know about it who would be willing to kill those who survivors to control the powers of the island.

Why did Sayid kill the guy on the golf course?
See above.

Why is there a dead polar bear in the desert?
He swam then walked?

Where's Michael?
I'm holding off on this but I'm about 99.9% sure we find out next week.

Why is 815 at the bottom of the ocean?
A staged accident to keep people from continuing to search so they don't stumble upon the island.

Why did Ben require Juliette to take a pill to board the submarine?
Could it be that the sub never went anywhere and he didn't want to show her the true means of transportation to the island?

That's a possibility.I also wonder if the sickness Desmond and Fisher Stevens had was counter-acted by the pill. It was a "vaccine" so to speak.

What the hell is going on with Charlotte and Faraday?
I think they're telling the truth, and are acting in good faith but Widmore (who they are working for) is not a good guy despite his daughter being good.

Where is Danielle?
Hiding Alex just like Ben asked her to.

That's my theories.

The book being sold/bought at auction by Widdamore was the ship's log of The Black Rock, which log had somehow turned up in Madagascar.

The Black Rock, you will recall, is where the 815 survivors, and Danielle, get their dynamite.

Consul:

Right. Where Artz got blown up when they were moving it. Widmore obviously wants the log very badly hence the high price for it. It's also noted by the auctioneer that the contents of the log are known only to Tovar Hanso (the seller and relative of Alvar Hanso?). If he doesn't know what's in it, why does he want it so badly?
