35 things I've learned in 35 years

1. Everyone has two measures for what is just: One for others and one for themselves.
2. People romanticize the past more than is warranted
3. Think you think your party, nation, or other identity group is doing things you think only your worst enemy would do.
4. Most people are poor due to bad decision making.
5. Vice related crime (drugs, prostitution, gambling) will never go away. Ever. You can make any or all of them capital offenses and they'll still be there.
6. There is no rule 6
7. Never pull a nail with a pair of plyers
8. It's not the years, it's the mileage
9. The right choice is almost always the hardest one.
10. People will rationalize their way into doing what they want to do and out of what they don't want to do.
11. People will do what's truly important to them, no matter the obstacle
12. If you'd rather go to work than the dentist, your job isn't that bad.
13. You paycheck is reflective of your value to a company. Doesn't matter how bad the economy is, or how your employer is doing. If they value you, they pay you.
14. You can tell a lot about a person by what they read, what music they like and what they drink.
15. Only enemies tell the raw, unvarnished truth. Friends, family and lovers are tangled in obligations that make such truth too difficult.
16. When you're a kid, summer lasts forever
17. Happiness comes in small doses
18. Happy is he who can live in the moment
19. The most powerful motivators are pain, fear, pleasure and pride (in that order).
20. Politics is now personal. Insult a man's ideas and he'll take it personally.
21. Most atheists don't disbelieve in God so much as they personally dislike him. (Orwell)
22. People who preach "tolerance" are only tolerant of the right people.
23. Women make decisions based on emotion and rarely on logic
24. Women overanalyze every personal interaction to the point of exhaustion
25. Making the transition from single guy to married guy pales in comparison to not being a father and being a father.
26. Once you know who you are and what you want in life things are much simpler.
27. People who are not parents are less mature than those who are not. Having someone rely on you for their very existence will do that.
28. Nobody thinks they're overpaid.
29. Everything is too expensive.
30. Travel is one of the surest ways to destroy old prejudices (and create new ones).
31. Reality TV is for stupid people
32. There's a huge difference between your wife and your girlfriend
33. Everyone is a hypocrite in some form or fashion
34. Girls don't like videogames and never will
35. The only true wealth is peace of mind.
