Stop quoting Koran, start reading it, says scholar

Let's hope this one picks up steam. Unlikely, but let's hope against hope.

excerpt:

Interpreting the Koran critically can also be dangerous.

In Egypt, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd was declared an apostate in 1995 for unorthodox reading of the Koran. A court annulled his marriage as he was deemed not a Muslim and Islamists threatened to kill him. He and his wife fled to the Netherlands.

Abu Zayd is one of eight modern scholars profiled in "The New Thinkers of Islam" with nearly all of them educated or having lived in the West where they could debate new ideas.

If they declared him "no longer a Muslim" he shouldn't be bound by their edicts right?

Three dead as Gaza gunbattles rage

Insty says:

Obviously the U.S. invasion of Palestine and the toppling of Arafat were mistakes, creating a quagmire of sectarian strife which despite official denials is now turning into open civil -- oops, wrong story template. That should have been: "It's all the Israelis' fault!"

Ha!

Al Qaeda for the Good Guys: The Road to Anti-Qaeda
Josh Manchester talks about non-state actors and the problems they're causing. He sketches out the motivators for NGO's engaged under arms. Read the whole thing.

Every now and then I'm not sure what to think and what we should be doing as far as domestic and foreign policy. Riding to the rescue is Sean Penn here with the answers. Shorter version: Impeach Bush et al. Don't elect anybody, Congress is the part of the problem. (There, I've saved you from having to read such drivel)

Socialist Presidential candidate won't meet with Segolene Royal.

Temple Grandin is a professor, author, PhD and the foremost darling of both animal rights people and the cattle industry. She is autistic and has a unique ability to think as livestock does. She has been instrumental in redesigning slaughterhouses and animal processing plants to minimize the trauma animals experience prior to slaughter. Here is a link to a documentary about this remarkable woman. It's well worth your time.

Maybe we should "love" Iran and Syria in the same fashion.

Rappers against Jihadis. Not bad.

It's not easy being green:

You Are a Tree

You love every part of the holidays, down to the candy canes and stockings. And you're goofy enough to put a Christmas tree ornament on your tree!

Mystery Surfaces Over Apartment of Kofi Annan's apartment. Roosevelt Island is a unique place. It's a stones throw from Manhattan yet completely unlike it. It is a quiet working class neighborhood that is (as Hugh Hewitt would say) "in, but not of" New York City. When you're there it feels more like Yonkers or Queens. I was initially very surprised that Kofi would want to live there. However, I can see that saving $4,500 a month is a very good reason (lack of tony shops notwithstanding.)

Aside: When I was denizen of Gotham I would frequently take out of towners on the tramride to/from Roosevelt Island while waiting for a table at Serendipty. It speaks volumes about New York that the wait was long enough to walk a few blocks and take a tram ride to another island and back. (It says even more about New Yorkers that they're willing to wait that long for a table.) Guinness used to host a fladgh there as well which made for a busy place.

Why reporting matters.
Short answer: because people's lives are in danger.

'Peace' Advocates Vandalize Cars at Army Recruiting Station

"Go home," troops that we totally support. You're "not welcome," good men and women of the armed services, whose service we appreciate so sincerely even though we don't necessarily support your mission in Iraq. Riiight. Tell me more about it.

The March to Mecca

This one broke my Snark-o-Meter.

Remember those who are not coming home for Christmas. Theres another one here. Really put a lump in my throat. We can never do enough for those who gave all. We don't do enough for those who came home permanently injured.

Channelling the NY Post: MJ top cash crop. Well, yes. The margin on this stuff is unreal. Not to mention its not particularly difficult to grow. Kids in my hometown used to smoke down by the railroad tracks where I used to walk my dog. In the spring after the rain there would be plants taller than me. (Dog poop + rain and sun I guess). Neighbors would sometimes call the cops and tell them to cut it down. Most seasons they didn't get the chance. Eradication efforts were for naught.

N. Korean demands rise as U.S. patience falls at talks
. What does that mean, exactly? Are we going to walk? No. They'll continue to keep their maximalist position and we'll go round and round until a Democrat gets elected and gives away the store (again). We should be actively working to collapse the regime.

Duke Case: The Worst Worsens. If there's justice in this world, Nifong will be disbarred, impeached and face prosecution for civil rights violations. I'm not holding my breathe.

Marines in Space. The economics of this one are sketchy. Second, how are you going to get back once you get there? I presume your fuel would be spent by the trip to the theater. I assume they'll maintain a "clear and hold" pending the arrival of a MEU or something.

I don't know what the heck a 'fladgh' is but you could mean a 'fleadh'...

Right. What he said. I have no idea where I got that spelling. Weird. Thanks for visiting. I'm wondering how you found the post.
