MSNBC - Foreigners enter Iraq for "martyr" missions

I've had a running arguement for ages now with a leftie on a board I frequent. He argues that those fighting the coalition forces are a broadly supported group of Iraqis with a smattering of imports. I've always contended that while there are a fair number of Iraqis (Ba'athist dead-enders and the like) even more are likely to be foreigners. The Islamofascists sent their varsity team to Afghanistan where they were thoroughly routed. They then moved on to Iraq where they were, again, thoroughly routed. Now that most of them are dead or on the run, they're calling for re-inforcements and aid from the Chechens et al. The intercepted letter (no link due to laziness) said they were abandoned by their Muslim bretheren who were allowing their fellow Muslims to be slaughtered by the "tens of thousands". I think that last bit might just be hyperbole. I do, however, believe they are on the losing side and they know it. The average Iraqi doesn't want them around. They may not like the Americans there but they sure as hell don't want the Fedayeen or Ba'ath party around anymore. Like people everywhere who have had a taste of freedom, they don't want to go back. They just want to go to work, raise their families, observe their faith and largely be left alone.

Grecht correctly noted (and ages ago, at that) there would be a dramatic increase in the op tempo by jihadist forces in Iraq. Anything that can be done to derail the election will be done. Bombings, mortar attacks, beheadings, sabre rattling and so on. Those on the Left here will shout that the sky is falling and worse. In the end, our best hope is to press on with the election and continue to build up Iraq to where it can take care of itself. If we pull out too soon, it will be worse than never having gone at all.
