I've since read a great deal more and firmly believe the only way to end the war was to break the Japanese completely. Their will was very strong and only complete and total devestation would convince them to give up arms. It took not just one but TWO atomic bombs to get them to surrender. War is a scourge but sometimes it is necessary. Dropping atomic bombs is horrific but it was the only way to win the war. Simply miraculous. I don't use that word lightly. Think of the odds of every single person aboard surviving a crash. I am awestruck.
"Sure, but the plane was landing so there was less fuel. Hence no explosion. And it landed and skidded off the runway, so it's not like it crashed on impact."
Granted. However, those planes are very big and moving very fast when they land. Any kind of crash can't be good. P = MV and this thing has tremendous amount of mass.
Autism down: Some credit mercury removal . Now that is interesting! I'm a dad with an autistic child who has cast a skeptical eye at the Thimerisol-causes-autism crowd since I started reading about it. I think Mr. Kirby overstates the correlation between the two but the fact that the number of cases dropped is, indeed interesting. It is highly possible that other factors are leading to the reduction in new cases but ultimately, we don't know. I think the problem is rooted in fear. The drug companies spend zillions to develop drugs (and vaccines) and any link to thimerisol would be financially ruinous for them. The class actions suit that would follow would literally sink them. Perhaps a limited liability waiver would be in order. If only, to know the truth about what their own research showed (if anything).

This surprised me as I've only read one of his books, Job: A Comedy of Justice. Which I rather liked. I don't really know why I don't read more of his stuff. I'll put him on the To Do list.

I have long been decrying the gross expansion of commercials in both news and entertainment programming. It's bad enough you have to endure them, but they keep increasing the frequency and duration. Much of this grumbling ended when I got TiVo. Now I skip the commercials and I can watch my show uninterrupted and get on with my life. David Kelley, of LA Law and The Practice fame is clamoring about the same thing: News : "Kelley said that when he worked on 'L.A. Law,' there were 48 minutes of show. That has been reduced over the years to a little more than 41 minutes."
He proposes corporate sponsorship of the entire program which may allow them to increase showtime to a whopping 43 minutes. Please. Product placement is a far less obtrusive way to advertise with fewer commerical breaks. Fox has been at the forefront with Ford commercials built into both ALIAS and 24. This is the absolute WORST case of blatant media bias I've ever seen. The entire editorial staff should be summarily flogged.
Speculation Alert! This one is highly speculative. I don't know what happened here but it does appear that there are CIA employees doing things they ought not to be doing. Conversely I had heard contemperaneous accounts that the embassy was bombed due to the type of bomb used. It seems the particular warhead was designed to home in on military grade communications arrays and the Chinese had just such an array on their roof. In retrospect, that's the one part of the operation I applauded most.
My wife talks in her sleep. She doesn't think she does, but she does. Two examples:
It's 3:45 AM. I sound asleep. My wife starts shaking my shoulder and says: "I need a shirt. I don't have a shirt to wear."
Me: "you need one now? It's 3:45 AM why do you need a shirt?"
Wife: "I don't know...zzzzzzzz"

It's late (I don't know what time) Nature calls. I get up, in the dark and I'm in my typical nightime attire. (Yes, I was in the altogether, simmer down) I have one hand on the doorknob to the bathroom and my wife asks me in an incredulous voice:
"WHERE are you going?"
Me: "I thought I'd do some gardening."
Wife: "What!? What are you talking about"
Me: "Nothing. I have to pee. Go back to sleep"
My snarkiness almost caused a row there. Gotta watch that. Seems Sleeping Wife (TM) has a short temper.
