Psychiatrist recounts performing exorcisms
Ok, this is interesting. I've skimmed "The Road Less Travelled" and I don't think the author is a kook. I wonder, however why now? It appears from the article he's a recent convert and this may be a result of his new enthusiasm for it. The last paragraph undermines that assumption. He talks of his attraction to the church as well as the problems he has with it. I don't think he's a blind zealot/overly enthusiastic new convert type. He seems sensible and rational and the experiences he relates were many years ago before he found his faith. Interesting.
So: here's the first one: It's 4:20 AM. #3 son is crying in his sleep. He's been teething and he's probably in pain. I go in to soothe him and as soon as I open the door, his brother pops up and says; "I can't watch this show, it's too loud." I assure him it's ok and finally get #3 back to sleep. As I'm getting ready to leave, I get the order from #2: "Give #3 a hug and kiss. Now you go find mommy."
I've been having trouble blogging of late largely b/c I don't feel like I have much to say. When it comes to current events and/or politics, there are so many who say so much more and so much better. I've thought about keeping it more to local news but that's about as exciting as reading an insurance form. Beyond that I'm left with daily observations and anecdotes which are tough to do well. I'll give that a try and see how it goes. I hope I don't lose my reader w/ this change.

The Smallest Minority Very interesting take on how technology is going to make us more green. The Luddite strain of environmentalism always struck me as bizaare and self-defeating. I think the effects this will have on families and society are not to be underestimated. It's hard to see what the effects will ultimately be but I can see communities being modeled differently going forward. More thoughts on this as they develop.

Strong Truths, Well Lived When I was in my last semester at College, I lived off campus which was a rarity for students. My school is penned in on various sides by neighborhoods that have stood for 60 years or more. There are also ordinances that preclude students from turning said houses in to dens of iniquity. Age and ownership restrictions are the primary means. As I was abroad for my previous semester I wasn't involved in housing selection so I rented a room in a house purchased by a recent grad. She seemed nice enough and I couldn't possibly be any closer to the school. It was literally one house away from campus. Through one of those fluke scheduling things I moved in before I met our other housemate, Matt. He was always at work when I was at class and vice versa. I finally met him after about 4 days. either that or we're going to get some snow. Good grief people, get a hold of yourselves. It looks like we're going to get between 4-8 inches of snow and the news reports act like it's friggin Judgment Day! Relax. I KNOW when I go to the grocery store later they're going to be out of milk and bread. Why? Why are these two items so precious? I know they're staple items but how much could you possibly need?

There seems to be this insistence that people are only being treated humanely if they are afforded every one of the Geneva protections. This is simply not so. There are many things you want to prevent terrorists from doing such as sending and recieving mail which may indicate who has been captured, who is talking and sending other signal messages. Similarly you don't want to allow them to fraternize openly as this will only raise their level of resistance and give them an opportunity to shank the squealers.
It is not only important but vital to remember they are not, in any way, covered by international law. They are literally subject to summary execution. This is a gaping hole in the Conventions. That sort of problem tends to crop up with 19th century documents in the 21st century. US law should be filling in the gaps here and for the most part it is.
